Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

A pelvic ultrasound scan will be used to assess the organs within the female pelvis. The uterus, endometrium, cervix, ovaries and coil (IUCD) position will all be evaluated during this scan. Gynaecological issues are quite frequent. Abnormal bleeding or spotting, pelvic pain, irregular periods, and fertility are the most prevalent causes of pelvic ultrasound scan recommendations. Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that affects women’s reproductive system and is often difficult to detect in its early stages. It is known as the “silent killer” because it usually presents no symptoms until it has progressed to an advanced stage. For women with a family history of ovarian cancer, the risk of developing the disease is higher. Therefore, ovarian cancer screening tests are crucial for the early detection and prevention of the disease.

  • How is this scan performed?

Pelvic scan can be performed by trans abdominal and trans vaginal methods to provide the most accurate diagnostics for organs such as the uterus, both ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Although it may not sound like the most comfortable procedure, it is completely painless and safe. Our staff will gently guide you and ensure your comfort throughout the examination. After the examination you can resume your regular activities without any delay

  • What are the reasons for Pelvic Scan?

    • Painful and heavy periods
    • Irregular periods
    • Abnormal bleeding or spotting between periods
    • Postmenopausal bleeding
    • Pelvic and lower abdominal pain, discomfort and bloating
    • Family history of ovarian cancer

    • Assessment of correct position of intrauterine device (IUD) or coil
  • What are the preparations for Pelvic Scan?

A full bladder is essential for transabdominal scan. If you choose a transvaginal scan (internal scan), no preparation or full bladder is required. If you are allergic to latex or have any concerns about transvaginal ultrasound, please let us know. In a transabdominal scan, your clinician applies a cool, clear gel to your lower abdomen and moves a wand-like transducer over the area, which emits sound waves into the body and if you feel any discomfort during the painless examination, you should inform the clinician.

When you undergo a transvaginal scan, you will lie on your back with your knees bent. A small ultrasound probe, similar in size to a tampon, will be inserted into your vagina after lubrication. The initial cold sensation of the gel will soon dissipate and the test should not cause any pain. If you experience any discomfort, let the clinician know.
