Early Pregnancy or Viability Ultrasound Scan

Early Pregnancy or Viability Ultrasound Scan (6-10 Weeks)

During the initial stages of pregnancy, which falls between 6-10 weeks, a viability scan is performed. This medical examination makes use of ultrasound technology to determine the existence of an intrauterine pregnancy and identify if it is a single or multiple pregnancy. Additionally, the estimated due date is calculated by measuring the fetus during this scan. To ensure comprehensive care, this scan can be preceded by the DatingUltrasound Scan (12-18 Weeks).

  • How is this scan performed?

Typically, early pregnancy scans are performed transabdominally, where the ultrasound probe is placed over the abdomen, and a full bladder is needed to get a clear image. However, in certain cases where the pregnancy is in its very early stages and not easily visible through a transabdominal scan, a transvaginal scan may be recommended. This scan involves a probe inserted into the vagina to get a closer look at the pregnancy.

Both transabdominal and transvaginal scans are completely painless, but it is essential to inform the medical professional if you have any concerns or inquiries regarding the procedure, or if you have a history of latex allergy. By being transparent about any discomfort or allergies, the medical team can make the necessary adjustments to ensure the patient’s comfort and safety throughout the examination. Early pregnancy scans play a crucial role in monitoring the health of both the mother and the developing fetus, and they are a routine part of prenatal care for expectant mothers.

  • What are the reasons for an Early Pregnancy Scan?

    • Confirm a viable intrauterine pregnancy.
    • Determine early miscarriage.
    • Verify whether you are having one or more baby.
    • Verify the heartbeat, size, and development of your infant.
    • Rule out an ectopic pregnancy caused by a previous C-section scar; early pregnancy scan is recommended.
    • Clinical findings cannot rule out ectopic pregnancy on their own. When a patient in the first trimester of pregnancy experiences vaginal bleeding or stomach pain, bedside ultrasound is recommended.
  • What are the preparations for an Early Pregnancy scan?

If you prefer a trans-abdominal scan, you need to have a full bladder by drinking 1 litter of water an hour before your scan. For a transvaginal scan, you do not need to have a full bladder. Before having a prenatal ultrasound, you can eat normally.
