The procedure for conducting a scan during pregnancy depends on the gestational age and individual circumstances. In most cases, a trans-abdominal scan is performed after the 10th week of pregnancy, where the ultrasound probe is placed over the abdomen to obtain images of the developing fetus. However, if the pregnancy is in its early stages, a trans-vaginal scan may be recommended before the 10th week or in instances where there are challenges accessing clear images through a trans-abdominal approach. Both of these approaches are non-invasive and generally painless. However, if the patient has any concerns or discomfort during the scan, it is important to inform the medical team promptly to ensure their safety and comfort.

You will be asked to drink 1 liter of water and keep your bladder full one hour before your visit for an abdominal dating ultrasound. A moderately full bladder will improve the visibility of the scan over the tummy. Before having a prenatal ultrasound, you can eat normally.
