Cervical Length Assessment Ultrasound Scan

A shortened cervix cannot adequately protect the infant and is more prone to early dilation. During pregnancy, it poses an increased risk of preterm birth. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor the length of the cervix using ultrasound scans. If it is found to be shortened, healthcare providers may recommend additional monitoring and interventions to mitigate the risk of preterm birth.

  • What is the Cervical Length Assessment Scan?

This scan is a safe and non-invasive ultrasound examination that measures the length of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. It is typically advised for women with a history of preterm labour or those considered at high risk for preterm birth. A shortened cervix raises the risk of premature delivery, leading to complications for both the mother and the baby. By evaluating it, healthcare providers can identify women who might benefit from interventions to prevent preterm labour and ensure optimal pregnancy management. The scan is usually conducted transvaginally and is a painless and swift procedure that provides valuable information for the care of both the mother and the baby.

  • What are the indications/reasons for Cervical Length Assessment Scan?

The Fetal Medicine Foundation recommends sonographic measurement of cervical length during pregnancy as it has several indications. One of the main indications is predicting high-risk pregnancies for early preterm delivery. A short cervix might indicate the risk of preterm birth, and thus monitoring cervical length is important for early detection and intervention. Another indication is distinguishing between true and false labor in women presenting with threatened preterm labor. This helps to determine if the patient is truly in labor and requires immediate intervention or if the labor can be delayed. Lastly, cervical length assessment can predict the likelihood of cesarean section after induction of labor. By measuring the cervical length, doctors can predict if the induction of labor will be successful or if a cesarean section will be required.

  • How is this scan performed?

The cervical length assessment scan is a non-invasive ultrasound exam of the cervix which helps to identify the risk of premature delivery in pregnant women. This scan is usually performed transvaginally and does not require a full bladder. During the scan, the woman lies down on her back with her feet in stirrups, and a small ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the vagina. The probe emits sound waves that create images of the cervix, which are displayed on a monitor for the healthcare provider to interpret. The procedure is quick and painless, and typically takes only a few minutes to complete
