Growth/Reassurance Ultrasound Scan (24–40 Weeks)
A growth ultrasound scan is a safe, non-invasive scan performed during the third trimester to provide information about your baby’s growth, position, and overall wellbeing. Many expectant parents choose this scan for reassurance and to monitor fetal development in the later stages of pregnancy.

During the scan, our trained clinicians may check:
- Fetal growth and measurements
- Amniotic fluid levels
- Placenta location and function
- Fetal presentation (position of the baby)
- Blood flow using Doppler study
This scan can also reveal your baby’s gender if you wish to know. Please note that while the scan provides helpful information about fetal development, it is not a precise method for predicting birth weight.
What are the reasons for a Growth/Wellbeing and Presentation Scan?
- Measure fetal biometrics in single or twin pregnancies
- Use a Doppler study to assess blood flow and placental function
- Check amniotic fluid levels
- Assess fetal movements and heartbeat
- Locate placenta position and identify low-lying placenta
- Check baby’s position near term (36–40 weeks)
- Support planning with your local hospital if the baby is in a breech or transverse position
- Consider maternal medical or obstetric history (e.g., high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid conditions, uterine fibroids, previous premature delivery, pre-eclampsia)
What are the preparations for this scan?
No special preparation or dietary restrictions are needed for this scan. Please bring your maternity notes to help track your baby’s growth and development. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid jewellery or metal objects. During the scan, your clinician will measure your baby’s size and growth, plotting the measurements on a Growth Assessment Protocol (GAP) chart to evaluate progress relative to your due date.
